A less common term for the complete absence of melanin in the skin or in normally pigmented tissue, see also albinism, phenylketonuria, piebaldism. The term "amelanotic" is clinically and also histologically common for non-pigmented or low-pigmented malignant melanomas.
The opposite term to amelanosis is hypermelanosis.
