Polymeric plastic produced by polymerizing 100-17,000 units of vinyl acetate. Depending on the degree of polymerization, compounds of different viscosity are formed. However, PVA is often copolymerized with acrylic acid, acrylates, vinyl laurate, vinyl chloride or ethylene. PVA is used in cosmetics. The compounds act as an antistatic agent (reduces static charges by neutralizing the electrical charge on the surface, e.g. of hair), combability aid (reduces or prevents tangling of the hair due to changes or damage on the hair surface and thus improves combability), emulsion stabilizer (supports emulsion formation and improves the resistance and durability of emulsions) and as a film former (forms a film on skin, hair when applied).
