Montmorillonites belong to the clay minerals (also called green/red alumina) with a high content of silicon compounds. Montmorillonite(s) is used in cosmetic formulations. The mixture of substances acts as an adsorbent (absorbs water- and/or oil-soluble dissolved or finely dispersed substances), emulsion former (supports the formation of emulsions and improves the resistance and shelf life of emulsions) and viscosity regulator (increases or reduces the viscosity of cosmetic products).

Montmorillonite is used in cosmetic formulations such as masks, peeling products, hair treatments and as an additive in various creams.
