Methyl salicylate, the ester of methanol and salicylic acid, is used in cosmetic formulations. The substance is generally produced synthetically. However, it also occurs in essential oils and as a plant hormone in leaves, flowers and roots of various plants. In cosmetic formulations methyl salicylate denatures alcohol and makes the products inedible. Furthermore, the substance is used as a fragrance.
