Methionine in its natural L-form (CAS number: 63-68-3) is an essential proteinogenic, sulphur-containing alpha-amino acid. The amino acid is found in the proteins of all living organisms. Next to cysteine and cystine, it is the main supplier of sulphur, which is needed for the construction of proteins.
Methionine has various medical-therapeutic uses, for example in liver diseases (controversial), in protein deficiency disorders, pregnancy toxicoses and poisoning. Methionine deficiency leads to severe liver parenchyma damage.

Methionine (methionine) is also used in cosmetic formulations. Methionine acts as an antistatic agent (reduces static charges by neutralizing the electrical charge on the surface, e.g. in hair). Furthermore, methionine has skin caring and hair conditioning properties (makes the hair easy to comb, smooth, soft and shiny and gives it volume).
