Extract of Chondrus crispus, the cartilaginous kelp, also known as Irish moss. Chondrus crispus is a red algae of the North Atlantic coasts, which occurs up to 25m sea depth. Chondrus crispus is red to brown in colour, in shallow waters also greenish-yellow. The cartilaginous kelp has an upright, multiform thallus of 10 to 15cm height.

The main components are carrageenans (about 50% carrageenin), proteins, mineral salts.

Chondrus crispus extract is used in cosmetic preparations (face and body care products) as viscosity regulator.

In naturopathy, red algae extracts are used as expectorant for respiratory tract diseases.
