Ceramides (1-6), natural glycolipids (lipids which have a carbohydrate content glycosidically bound to the amino alcohol sphingosine) which are found in the horny layer of the skin. They are also important membrane components of the nervous tissue. Ceramides (1,1A, 2, 4, 5, 6II) are used in cosmetic products as skin care and hair conditioning agents. Ceramides 3 act as skin care and skin protection agents.
