Alkanones is a subgroup of the ketones which can be derived from the alkanes. The carbonyl group of the alkanone carries linear, branched or cyclic (cycloalkanones) alkyl groups (R1-CO-R2) on both sides. By definition, alkanones contain no other heteroatoms, not even multiple bonds. The simplest alkone is acetone (CH3-CO-CH3).
