Acetone (from Latin acetum = vinegar), the simplest representative of ketones, is a pleasantly smelling, colourless liquid.

Acetone is used in cosmetic products as viscosity regulator. Furthermore the substance is used as a solvent. It is now only rarely used as a component of nail polishes (dissolves lipids from the nails, thus making them dry and brittle).
