Acronym for "Modified Medical Research Council Scale"

The MRC-Scale can be used as a score to assess the respiratory distress in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The scaling is done in 5 steps:

  • 0 = shortness of breath only in case of exceptional stress
  • 1= Difficulty breathing when climbing stairs, going uphill
  • 2 = difficulty in breathing when walking on the level
  • 3 = Patient must stop after 100m due to shortness of breath
  • 4 = Difficulty breathing when dressed and undressed, patient is too short of breath to leave the house.

The MMRC scale is used in the GOLD classification of COPD severity.
