The protein of the same name encoded by the IL10 gene is a cytokine(interleukin-10) that is mainly produced by monocytes and to a lesser extent by lymphocytes. This cytokine has pleiotropic effects on immune regulation and inflammation. It downregulates the expression of Th1 cytokines, MHC class II Ag and costimulatory molecules on macrophages. It also promotes the survival and proliferation of B cells and the production of antibodies.
