Dimethyl ether is the simplest ether; it has 2 methyl groups as organic residues and can be obtained by condensation from 2 molecules of methanol (with elimination of water). Under normal conditions it is a colourless, slightly narcotic, non-toxic, highly flammable gas. The substance is polar and in liquid form an excellent solvent.

Dimethyl ether is widely used as a propellant, e.g. in hair sprays and in paint sprays.
