Codium Tomentosum, the Atlantic green alga belongs to the species-rich plant group of algae, which comprises about 25,000 algae species and > 100,000 subspecies. The 4 major algae families are: green algae, brown algae, red algae and micro algae.

The Atlantic green algae, nicknamed "Maritime Moisturizing Factor", is mainly found in saltwater puddles, which are filled and rinsed at high tide, but may dry out at low tide.

Extracts of Codium tomentosa are used in cosmetic products. They have skin-protective effects.
