Abietic acid (from Latin abies "fir") is a resin acid, i.e. a component of tree resin. Abietic acid belongs to the tricyclic diterpene carboxylic acid group. The esters and salts of abietic acid are called abietates. The optically active abietic acid is the main component of the colophonium. Derivatives of abietic acid form the basic substance of succinic acid.
