Definition

Gruppe tetrazyklischer, steroidaler Bitterstoffe (Triterpen), die in Pflanzen meist in glykosidischer Form vorhanden sind. Cucurbitacine sind hitzebeständige, kaum wasserlösliche Substanzen; sie bleiben somit beim Kochen von Gemüse erhalten. 

Vorkommen

Cucurbitacine kommen vorwiegend in Gurken (Cucumis) und Kürbisgewächsen (Cucurbitaceae), in einigen Kreuzblütlern (Brassicaceae) sowie in dem japanischen Ständerpilz (Basidiomycetes) Hebeloma vinosophyllum vor. Etwa 200 Derivate der Cucurbitacine sind bekannt.

Wirkungen

Cucurbitacine haben eine stark abführende, diuretische, blutdrucksenkende, antirheumatische und antiproliferative (experimentell) Wirkung. Alle Cucurbitacine sind in entsprechenden Konzentrationen toxisch.

Sie haben insektizide und antimykotische Wirkungen. Von großem wissenschaftlichem Interesse ist ihre antiproliferative Wirkung, die experimentell bei zahlreichen Tumorzelllinien nachgewiesen wurden (Chondrosarkom, Melanom, Bonchialkarzinom, Colonkarzinom). Cucurbitacine hemmen die JAK-STAT3-  und MAPK-Signalwege, die eine zentrale Rolle bei Apoptose und Überleben von Tumorzellen spielt. Weiterhin hemmen sie Migration und Invasivität von Tumorzellen.
