Definition

Arbutin ist ein natürlich vorkommendes Glukosid das aus v.a. aus Uvae uris folium, den Blättern der Bärentraube gewonnen werden kann. Es wird auch bei anderen Pflanzenspezies gefunden, so bei Ericaceae, Lamiaceae, Rosaceae, Caprifoliaceae u.a.  Als Hydrochinonderivat wirkt es in Externa (nicht selten finden sich Extrakte von Bärentraubenblättern in (Natur-) Kosmetika) hemmend auf die Melanogenese, also hautaufhellend. Arbutin wird im Organismus hydrolytisch in Hydrochinon und Glukose gespalten. 
Arbutin ist auch in den Blättern des Preiselbeerstrauches enthalten.
