Definition

Polypodium leucotomos (PLE) ist eine epiphytische Farnart die ursprünglich in Zentralamerika beheimatet war und dort auch als "calaguala" bezeichnet wird. Die Mayas verwendeten Polypodium leucotomos als "Blutreinigungstees". Polypodium leucotomos wächst nur selten am Boden. Die Pflanze besitzt ein dickes, hochverzweigtes Rhizom, das von roten Schuppen bedeckt ist. Die Stengel sind lang und mit dem Rhizom über kleine Polypodien verbunden. Die Blätter sind 30-150 cm lang, 18-50 cm breit, mit 10-40 cm langen Blattstielen und einem stumpfen, scharfen oder abgerundeten Ende. Sie können fest, krautartig, papierartig oder membranös-lederartig sein, meistens sind sie glatt. Mittlerweile erfolgt der Anbau in Plantagen in verschiedenen Ländern Latein- und Südamerikas.

Studien: Bei Vitiligo ließen sich in Kombination mit Schmalband UVB-Bestrahlungen (Phillipps TL-01/Initialdosis zwischen 210 und 360 mJ/cm2) in bis zu 50 % der Patienten Repigmentierungen nachweisen, allerdings nur im Bereich von Kopf und Hals (Middelkamp-Hup MA et al. 2007) 

Wirkungen

Antioxidans, Fänger freier Radikale und freier Sauerstoffgruppen. Daher photoprotektive Eigenschaften gegen die Effekte von UV-Strahlen.
  • Hemmung des Verlustes von Langerhanszellen
  • Hemmung der Bildung von Cyclobutan-Pyrimidin-Dimeren durch UVB-Strahlen
  • Hemmung von Kollagenproteinasen
  • Hemmung der Migration von Mastzellen in die Haut.

Anwendungsgebiet/Verwendung

Verwendung als perorales Lichtschutzmittel.
